2/17 - Minnesota Breeder & Racino

17 February 2012

By: Racino Now Staff

Dennis Strohkirch was involved in the group that originally brought pari-mutuel racing to the state of Minnesota and now he's hoping to help bring Racino legislation here as well. Recently, the St. Croix Valley Press wrote an article about Mr. Strohkirch, his breeding operation and what Racino would mean for Minnesota. Here's a small snippet:

While Florida, New York and California are big race horse states, Strohkirch said, the majority of the great race horses still come from Kentucky. He doesn’t expect that to change overnight, but he believes the increased purses resulting from a racino would give Minnesota a huge boost in the eyes of the racing community.

“If we get the racino passed  — and we’ve been working on it for 10 years  — we’re automatically on the map,” he said. “There’ve been 13 other states that have passed the racino, and their numbers have just gone wild. Right now the horse industry is $1.1 billion in Minnesota. If we get the racino, it will go to about $3.5 billion. The number of jobs it would create would be unbelievable.

2/10 - Racino About Competition

10 February 2012

By: Racino Now Staff

A recent opinion piece submitted to the Forest Lake Times by Rep. Mark Buesgens (R-Jordan) dispells some of the myths about Racino legislation. Namely, "Opponents of gaming competition sometimes work so hard to find a reason to oppose Racinos that they lose track of their fundamental beliefs. More than 70 percent of Minnesotans support Racinos because they would add more competition to a gaming industry in which there is not currently real competition. "

Additionally, Rep. Buesgens goes on to state, "Racino supporters don’t believe that tribal casinos should be taxed — that horse is out of the barn. But they also shouldn’t receive monopoly protection for their tax-free operations. Since the state-tribal compacts don’t prohibit competition, and the Minnesota Constitution allows state-owned lottery games, there is little reason for the Legislature to continue the self-imposed prohibition on video lottery terminals at horse tracks. Minnesota should join the 14 other states that allow Racinos, and create the jobs that come with those Racinos in the construction, hospitality and agricultural industries."

2/10 - Rep. Barrett Supporting Racino

10 February 2012

By: Racino Now Staff

Rep. Barrett (R-Shafer) recently indicated that he is willing to support Racino legislation. According to an article in the Chisago County Press, "his position on the Vikings’ facility is that he is leaning towards the racino system to help fund the project. He has heard from people who are employed at Running Aces who support the expanded gambling at the two horse tracks."

Racino legislation would add video lottery terminals to Minnesota two racetracks.
